In the 89th BCCI Annual General Meeting, Indian Premier League (IPL) got the nod for the addition of two new teams from 2022 season while the mega-auction was also pushed from IPL 2021 to IPL 2022.
Earlier mega-auction was scheduled to take place before the start of the 2021 season but due to time constraints and also to avoid back-to-back mega auction, as the addition of new teams in IPL 2022 lead to mega auction before the season.

All the existing sets of players have a contract with their respective franchise till IPL 2020, with no mega auction, franchisees will have to complete contractual formalities ahead IPL 2021 auction with those players whom teams would like to retain for IPL 2021 season.
